Observed reduction in fracture toughness of AlN and AlN–Mo ceramic matrix composites with carbon additive

چکیده

Abstract The fracture toughness of AlN ceramic matrix composites containing carbon (0.5 vol%), yttria (5.0 and Mo (0.0–4.0 vol%) was evaluated using Vickers indentation. results these measurements were compared to a carbon-free, commercial (ST-200 ALN) as well AlN–Mo compositions from the literature. presence added found correlate with 21% reduction in 0.0 vol% carbon-containing sample, ST-200 AlN, both A-orientation (indentation parallel pressing direction) B-orientation perpendicular direction). additions at small loading fractions (~ 0.25 exhibit greater-than-expected increases A-orientation, when literature data on composites. This increase correlates removal elemental through reaction additive, forming 2 C, localized particle sites. Further increasing observed result generally values, would be expected data. Prediction of Mode II of Fracture Toughness in Laminate Composites

In this paper, effects of ply orientation of adjacent plies with (ϕ//θ) interfaces on mode II critical strain energy release rate (fracture toughness) of multidirectional (MD) laminate has been studied. Ply orientation of adjacent plies is one of the most important parameters affects the mode II critical strain energy release rate () in the initiation of the delamination. To  study this paramet...

Experimental Assessment of Toughness in Ceramic Matrix Composites using the J-integral with Digital Image Correlation Part II: Application to Ceramic Matrix Composites

This paper is the second of a two-part series assessing the feasibility of using the J-integral with full-field deformation data from Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to characterize toughness in continuous fiber, SiCf/SiCc ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). In Part I, line and area integral adaptations of the J-integral were validated with analytical and experimental deformation fields. It was f...

Fracture Toughness of Polypropylene-Based Particulate Composites

The fracture behaviour of polymers is strongly affected by the addition of rigid particles. Several features of the particles have a decisive influence on the values of the fracture toughness: shape and size, chemical nature, surface nature, concentration by volume, and orientation. Among those of thermoplastic matrix, polypropylene (PP) composites are the most industrially employed for many di...

Ceramic matrix composites containing carbon nanotubes: The story so far

Due to the remarkable physical and mechanical properties of individual, perfect carbon nanotubes (CNTs), they are considered to be one of the most promising new reinforcements for structural composites. Their impressive electrical and thermal properties also suggest opportunities for multifunctional applications. In the context of inorganic matrix composites, researchers have particularly focus...
